GIKS Bericht 2009-12-01
Het is met veel genoegen dat ik u hierbij het eerste GIKS-bericht stuur. Van nu af aan zullen de GIKS berichten regelmatig (maar niet dagelijks en ook enkel als er iets te berichten valt) worden toegestuurd aan iedereen die op de mailing list van het Gents Instituut is ingeschreven. Indien u deze berichten niet meer wenst te ontvangen, volstaat een eenvoudig mailtje aan
De GIKS berichten hebben een min of meer vaste structuur. Eerst is er de 'Kalender' die de wekelijkse en maandelijkse evenementen in verband met Klassieke aan de UGent of georganiseerd door medewerkers van de UGent in herinnering brengt. Daarna volgt de rubriek 'Berichten', waar u call for papers vindt, jobaanbiedingen, summer courses e.d.m. vindt die voor senior en junior onderzoekers en studenten interessant kunnen zijn.

Heel in het bijzonder vraag ik uw aandacht voor het pas opgerichte interuniversitaire 'Roman Society Research Center', dat ruimte biedt voor alle aspecten van de geschiedenis van de Romeinse wereld. 8-WEEK INTENSIVE LATIN AND GREEK SUMMER SCHOOL, UNIVERSITY COLLEGE CORK, IRELAND
June 28th – August 19th 2010
The Department of Classics offers an intensive 8-week summer school for beginners with parallel courses in Latin and Greek. The courses are primarily aimed at postgraduate students in diverse disciplines who need to acquire a knowledge of either of the languages for further study and research, and at teachers whose schools would like to reintroduce Latin and Greek into their curriculum.
In each language 6 weeks will be spent completing the basic grammar and a further 2 weeks will be spent reading simple, unadapted texts.

Call for papers
The Israel Society for the Promotion of Classical Studies have pleasure in announcing its 39th annual conference to be held at the University of Haifa, Wed.-Thurs., 9-10 June 2010.
The conference is the annual meeting of the Israel Society for the Promotion of Classical Studies. Papers on a wide range of classical subjects, such as history, philology, philosophy, archaeology of Greece and Rome and neighbouring countries are welcome. The time limit for each lecture is 20 minutes. The official languages of the conference are Hebrew and English. Sessions where Israeli scholars present their papers are held in Hebrew; sessions where foreign scholars deliver their lectures are held in English. Accommodation at reduced prices will be available in a local hotel. Registration forms with a list of prices will be sent to participants in due course.

All proposals should be accompanied by a one page abstract (about 250-300 words) proposals in Hebrew should also be accompanied by a one page abstract in English to appear in the conference brochure. All proposals should reach the secretary by 31st December, 2009 Decisions will be made after the organizing committee has duly considered all the proposals. If there is need for a decision prior to late January, please indicate this in your letter and we will try to accommodate your needs.
