Han Baltussen (University of Adelaide / VLAC Fellow 2010-11, Brussel), The last Pagan Gospel? Simplicius en het einde van het antieke Platonisme

Simplicius (gestorven ca AD 530) is bekend als schrijver van kommentaren en hij was een typisch product van de Laat-Platoonse school door zijn focus op Aristoteles. Maar zijn aanpak in zijn kommentaren is nogal a-typisch, wat tot zeer recent niet altijd geapprecieerd werd en nogal wat uitdagingen met zich meebrengt voor de moderne onderzoeker. In deze voordracht wil ik een andere kant van Simplicius laten zien, die in mijn ogen een competitie met de Christendom aanging in zijn verwoede poging de heidense filosofie tot een eenheid te smeden. De uitkomst van dit proces is ons allen wel bekend, maar de manier waarop hij dit wilde bereiken wellicht nog niet.

Prähistorische und antike Göttinnen. Befunde – Interpretation – Rezeption
Heilbronn, 25-27 März 2011

Aus Anlass des 20jährigen Bestehens unseres Netzwerkes möchten wir in Kooperation mit den Städtischen Museen Heilbronn zu einer Tagung einladen, die dieses Mal weder die Lebenswelt der prähistorischen und antiken Frauen noch die Berufswelt der Archäologinnen zum Thema hat, sondern Göttinnen der Vorgeschichte in den Mittelpunkt stellen soll. Während in der Archäologie der mediterranere Kulturen Göttinnen aufgrund der zahlreichen Schrift- und Bildquelle ein immer beachtetes Forschungsthema waren, scheint auf Seiten der Archäologie schriftloser Kulturgruppen selten der Schritt über die Identifizierung von Göttinnenbildern hinaus gewagt zu werden. Der Schwerpunkt ruht auf einer archäologischen Annäherung an die prähistorische und antike Verehrung von Göttinnen, wobei der regionale und zeitliche Rahmen den Vorderen Orient und Europa vom Paläolithikum bis zur Spätantike umfassen soll, um ein Vergleich des regional unterschiedlichen Forschungsstandes zu erreichen.

University of Nottingham
Centre for Advanced Studies - Post-Doctoral Bursaries

Applications are invited for the CAS Post-Doctoral Bursaries from Early Career Researchers who have been awarded their PhD in the last 24 months and whose work complements any area of Arts and Social Sciences research. Preference will be given to proposals that fall within CAS’s current interdisciplinary research themes (see below). Applicants can apply from across the UK and abroad. The application deadline for 2011- 12 is 28th February 2011.

Applications will also be welcomed from candidates wishing to undertake a piece of significant research involving the University’s collections (including the archaeological collections, art collection, manuscripts and special collections and natural history collections). The bursaries are tenable for up to nine months in the 2011/2012 academic year starting from 1st September at the earliest. 

The focus of the post-doctoral bursaries is to enable candidates to undertake a significant piece of work - research, publication of thesis or engagement with non-academic organisation to broaden the impact of their research. Preference will be given to candidates who give a clear indication as to how the bursary will enhance their chances in an application for a post-doctoral fellowship award based at the University of Nottingham from external funders such as the British Academy, ESRC or Leverhulme. The fit to research strengths and interests at Nottingham is thereby an important selection criterion for the bursary competition.  

The bursaries include an honorarium of up to £9,000 (£1,000 per full calendar month of award). The award can be held for a minimum period of 3 months and a maximum of 9 months.
