Welcome to the website of the Ghent Institute for Classical Studies (GICS). The GICS was founded in 2010 by Prof. dr. Koen Verboven in order to gather all scholars working on Classical Antiquity at Ghent University. Its members are drawn from the departments and research units of ancient history, archaeology (MARU and HARG), literary studies (Greek & Latin literature and linguistics), ancient philosophy, law and religious studies. Their expertise covers the Greco-Roman world in all its aspects from its beginnings to its reception in the contemporary world. Through GICS, the Classics community at Ghent University seeks to raise its visibility outside its own university by increasing its outreach efforts and further expanding its international network.

At Ghent University, the GICS aims specifically to:

  • facilitate the collaboration between the different research groups
  • coordinate projects, and organize public lectures, seminars, workshops, conferences and other events within the field of Classical Antiquity
  • circulate information on UGent activities in Classical Studies among his members, and to inform the wider public about these core activities

In particular, each academic year, the GICS organizes a series of lectures on a broad theme. This year's theme is 'True and Fake News'. You can find more information on the lectures here.
